This is a continuing prescriptions service only. Shire Family Medical does not provide ADHD assessments or new diagnoses. Patients must already have a confirmed ADHD diagnosis and be under the ongoing care of a psychiatrist or paediatrician. New assessments must be arranged with a specialist.

About This Service

Safe, Structured Continuing Care for Existing ADHD Treatment Plans

We provide ongoing ADHD management appointments at Shire Family Medical for eligible patients who are already under the care of a psychiatrist or paediatrician. These consultations are for continuation of existing ADHD medication, in line with NSW Health requirements for authorised prescribers.

All ADHD management appointments are with Dr Katrina Mikhail.

Important: This is a continuation prescribing service. Dosage changes or new medications cannot be initiated through this clinic alone. Any change to medication or dose must be guided by the treating psychiatrist or paediatrician.


Eligibility

Who This Service Is For

Please read the eligibility criteria carefully before booking. This service is not suitable for all patients.

  • Are aged 6 years or older
  • Have a confirmed ADHD diagnosis
  • Are already under the care of a psychiatrist or paediatrician
  • Require ongoing prescriptions for their current ADHD medication
  • Are registered for MyMedicare with our practice
  • Have a current correspondence letter from their treating specialist

✕ Service is not for patients who:

  • Have not yet been assessed for ADHD
  • Need a new ADHD diagnosis
  • Want to change their ADHD medication or dose
  • Do not have a current psychiatrist or paediatrician
  • Do not have a current correspondence letter from their specialist
  • Are not registered for MyMedicare at Shire Family Medical

If you do not yet have an ADHD diagnosis, please speak with your GP about a referral to a psychiatrist or paediatrician for a new assessment.


Before You Book

Referral & Documentation Required

Before booking your first ADHD management appointment, you must have the following documentation available:

A correspondence letter from your psychiatrist or paediatrician confirming your ADHD diagnosis
The letter must outline your current medication, dosage, and treatment plan
The letter must be current and available for review at your appointment

MyMedicare registration required. Patients must be registered for MyMedicare with Shire Family Medical before attending an ADHD management appointment. You can register online or ask our reception team when booking.

What we can provide with this service:

  • Continue prescribing stimulant medications such as dexamfetamine, lisdexamfetamine, or methylphenidate, as outlined in the specialist's letter
  • Regular medication reviews as part of shared care with the psychiatrist or paediatrician
  • Prescribing in line with NSW Health criteria and regulatory requirements

What this service cannot provide:

  • New ADHD diagnoses or assessments
  • Changes to medication type or dosage
  • Initiation of new ADHD medications
  • New ADHD diagnoses or assessments
  • Changes to medication type or dosage initiated by the GP
  • Initiating ADHD medication without a specialist letter

Getting Started

Follow these steps before booking your first ADHD management appointment at Shire Family Medical.

Obtain a Correspondence Letter from Your Specialist

Contact your psychiatrist or paediatrician and request a current correspondence letter confirming your ADHD diagnosis, your current medication, dosage, and treatment plan. This letter must be available at your appointment.

Register for MyMedicare at Shire Family Medical

Patients must be registered for MyMedicare at our practice. You can register online at my.gov.au or ask our reception team to assist when booking.

Book an "ADHD Meds Initial" Appointment Online

Book online at shirefamilymedical.com/book and select "ADHD Meds Initial" for your first appointment. All ADHD management appointments must be booked with Dr Katrina Mikhail.

Bring your specialist letter to your appointment. Your appointment cannot proceed without a current correspondence letter from your psychiatrist or paediatrician.

All ADHD management appointments at Shire Family Medical are conducted by Dr Katrina Mikhail, a registered medical practitioner (BMedSt/MD, FRACGP) with clinical interests in paediatrics, chronic health management and preventative care.

As an authorised continuing prescriber, Dr Mikhail works in shared care with your treating psychiatrist or paediatrician — providing regular reviews and ongoing prescriptions for your ADHD medication, in line with NSW Health requirements.

Each review is a chance to discuss how your treatment is working and keep your prescriptions and ECG monitoring up to date.

No. This service is for continuing management only. Patients must already have a confirmed ADHD diagnosis from a psychiatrist or paediatrician. New assessments need to be arranged with a specialist. If you do not yet have a diagnosis, speak with your GP about a specialist referral.

You must have a current correspondence letter from your treating psychiatrist or paediatrician confirming your ADHD diagnosis and outlining your existing medication and dosage. This letter must be available at your appointment. Without it, the appointment cannot proceed.

No. As continuing prescribers, our GPs can only prescribe the medication already outlined in your specialist’s letter. Any change to medication type or dose must be directed by your treating psychiatrist or paediatrician, and an updated letter will be required before the new medication can be prescribed at Shire Family Medical.

Stimulant medications used to treat ADHD can have cardiovascular effects. An ECG (electrocardiogram) is completed before your initial consultation with Dr Katrina Mikhail to ensure there are no cardiac contraindications to prescribing. This is performed on-site and takes approximately 15 minutes.

MyMedicare is a voluntary patient registration program that formally links you with a preferred GP practice. Registration is required to access certain Medicare-funded services, including ongoing ADHD management appointments. You can register via myGov or ask our reception team for assistance when booking.

We can continue prescribing stimulant medications such as dexamfetamine, lisdexamfetamine, or methylphenidate, as outlined in the psychiatrist’s or paediatrician’s correspondence letter. We cannot initiate new medications or adjust existing doses — those changes must be made by the treating specialist first.

Yes. This service is available for patients aged 6 years and older, provided they meet all eligibility requirements including having a confirmed ADHD diagnosis from a paediatrician or psychiatrist and a current correspondence letter. A parent or guardian must accompany children to appointments.
