About this Service
At Shire Family Medical, we provide patient-centred GP care for women at every stage of life — from adolescence through to post-menopause. Our GPs listen, provide advice, and support you in making informed healthcare decisions.
Whether you’re attending for a routine check-up, contraceptive advice, support with menopause management, or any other concern, we aim to provide evidence-based care in a respectful and confidential setting. We welcome patients of all backgrounds.

Our GPs provide a broad range of women’s health services at our Sutherland clinic.
Contraception Counselling
Discussion of contraceptive options including the pill, Implanon, IUD, and other methods. Tailored to your health history and circumstances.
IUD Services
Intrauterine device insertion, removal, and replacement available on-site. Includes initial consultation and procedure appointment.
Cervical Screening
Cervical screening (Pap smear replacement) recommended every 5 years for women aged 25–74. Provided in a supportive, private setting.
Breast Health Checks
GP assessment for breast health concerns. Referrals to imaging or specialists where clinically appropriate.
Menopause Support
Assessment and management of perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms. Discussion of management options including HRT where appropriate.
Pre-conception & Pregnancy
Fertility advice, pre-conception planning, early pregnancy support, and shared care referrals to your chosen maternity service.
Menstrual Concerns
Assessment and management of irregular cycles, heavy bleeding, period pain, and related conditions.
Bone Health
Advice on osteoporosis prevention, calcium and vitamin D, and bone health across the lifespan.
Mental Health & Wellbeing
GP support for mental health concerns, including Mental Health Treatment Plans for Medicare-subsidised psychology sessions.
Procedures Available On-site
Implanon (Contraceptive Implant)
The Implanon is a small rod inserted under the skin of the upper arm that provides contraceptive protection for up to three years. Several of our GPs are trained to insert and remove the Implanon contraceptive implant on-site.
- Initial consultation to discuss suitability and consent
- Insertion procedure — typically quick and well-tolerated
- Removal available when required or at three years
- Removal and reinsertion in the same appointment available

IUD (Intrauterine Device)
Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are a highly effective, long-acting form of contraception. Both hormonal and copper IUDs may be discussed at your consultation.
- Initial consultation to discuss options, suitability, and consent
- IUD insertion — separate procedure appointment
- IUD removal when required
- IUD replacement available

We offer early pregnancy support including shared care arrangements where appropriate. Your GP can also discuss your options and provide referrals to your chosen maternity service.
Yes. If you’re experiencing stress, anxiety, low mood, or other mental health concerns, your GP can assess your needs and, if appropriate, provide a Mental Health Treatment Plan to access Medicare-subsidised psychology sessions. Please book a long appointment if this is a concern you’d like to address.
Perimenopause is the transitional period leading up to menopause, during which hormone levels change and symptoms such as irregular periods, hot flushes, and mood changes may occur. Menopause is defined as 12 consecutive months without a period. Your GP can assess your symptoms and discuss management options with you.
Shire Family Medical is a mixed billing practice. Standard consultation fees apply for most patients, with Medicare rebates processed on the day. Bulk billing may be available for eligible patients including children 12 and under on weekdays. See our Fees page for full details.
